The iconic lion king photograph. This image was the start of the Pride of Africa collection and is a popular favorite under many clients and collectors.
This image I captured on my first photo safari through southern Africa. Two friends had joined me on this adventure – travelling in my own car with roof top tent – from Cape Town to Botswana and Namibia.
I can still recall it as if it had been yesterday. It happened to be our last evening before heading back home, so we decided to have a proper breakfast with eggs and bacon the next morning. Everybody was looking forward to it as most days we would go out with no breakfast, only having tea and a biscuit on the way.
I was woken up by my inner voice talking to me: “Klaus, you have to go out and shoot, otherwise you will miss out.” I followed this voice, woke up my friends and off we drove to where we had observed a pride of lions the day before.
The timing could not have been better. There he stood, the Lion King, looking over the land waiting for his lionesses to return from their early morning hunt. The scene was electric! There was silence all around us, and I could hear the warm wind blowing through the dry grass of the Etosha plains.
The proudness with which the lion stood there filled us all with indescribable emotion. Nobody uttered a word, as we did not want to break the majesty of this moment. I simply pressed the shutter – that was it – and the “Pride of Africa” collection was born. I am very proud to share this amazing picture on that special day with you, one that changed the path of my career and life in one definable moment.
