IMAGE STORY

Visiting Amboseli National Park was a highlight to my photo safari in Kenya. As most first visitors, I longed to see the big tusked elephants which roam the territory often in large herds.

After a couple of days it became clear that there is so much more, that is the extreme diverse landscape unfolding below Mt Kilimanjaro. Today I find myself waiting at a kind of crossover point near Observation Hill. Often we were to be close to this hill, which draws us like a magnet.

Here three pathways join up. I look through my binoculars into the distance of dry, dusty plains. Then I turn around and there is green grass and water. The contrast is spectacular.

Some of these swamps are permanently fed by melt water fed by underground springs from the peaks of Kilimanjaro. With their sedges, water-lilies and papyrus they are highly important for survival of the wildlife in this area.

Although the swamps attract the elephants like a magnet, I learned that it can prove to be a challenge to be in the right spot for taking a photograph of the big mammals.

So there I sit waiting for the herd that I spotted in the distance to come closer. When they are just a few hundred meters away from the car, I get my camera ready. I carefully open the door of the car. I want to be prepared and allow myself room to get the perfect position for this shot. The elephants move fast. Their destination is close and their minds are focused. Quickly they reach our car, within seconds I press the shutter a few times and see the herd passing by through my viewfinder.

It was breathtaking close …

• All original photographs by Klaus Tiedge (+01.07.2019) are now released as an estate print with an embossed signature of Klaus Tiedge on the front (bottom right) and are released by the artistʼs wife Sandra Tiedge with a detailed authorisation on the back of the print.

• As our standard we are using Giclee printing method on high quality archival fine art paper e.g. Hahnemühle German Etching, Epson Cold Press paper.
