Amazing capture of two cheetahs hunting a group of zebras. Fantastic impression of the landscape and the animals in action.
Carefully and in safe distance we followed three cheetahs, well known in the Masai Mara area, as the three brothers.
Cheetahs are usually single hunters that is why these guys were such an exceptional trio.
Being on their heels since 2 days, hoping to see a hunt but never saw them pulling it through.
Today we tried to be extremely cautious to keep a certain distance and always checked the wind so that we do not disturb them.
We were checking through our binoculars taking turns, the trio already split up in a half circle around a herd of zebra grazing.
Almost simultaneously they stooped, head down and focusing on their desired prey. Their shoulder blades lifting in slow altering motion.
I thought to myself, “I would not much time to press the shutter in right timing …which is the right lenses, the 300mm, the 70-200mm?”
I decided for the 300mm. Considerately I opened the skylight of the car roof and stacked out with my camera, waiting like a soldier sitting in an outlook.
Using this position seldom, I thought this time it would give me the best perspective as I could not predict in which direction the cheetahs will sprint off to.
Suddenly, they sped off, the zebras ran too and split into 3 groups, the cheetah trio decided for the left one and followed them, catching up fast.
They grabbed one with the pranks, but then, – we could not believe our eyes, just before the zebra was going down, the cheetahs let go.
