Large herd of elephants photographed in Amboseli – this image gives a good impression of the vast landscape these animals live in.
I woke up by a big thirst this morning. With half open eyes, I open the zip of my roof top tent, climb down the ladder and grab the water bottle, which was luckily cooled down by the fresher air of the night.
We had camped on the west side of the park after we had crossed the large dried up Lake Amboseli yesterday afternoon.
With reluctance I think of our journey back through the dry saltpan in the unbearable heat.
I do not want to waste the cooler morning hours, that´s why we set off fairly quickly. My miserable mood is somehow swept away while my eyes drift away in this vast flat and open land around us. It´s so dry that the soil is a pattern of deeply cracked open furrows. In the distance a group of giraffes swirl up a dust trail.
It is re-fascinating for me every time what large distances most animals travel in the search of water and what strain and risk they face day to day.
We met these two elephant herds just before we drove out of the big saltpan. I like this image because it brings closer the imagination of the big elephant herds and the vast land they live in.
