Ngupa

This is the wonderful tale of my encounter with the Himba Tribe and an old man named Ngupa. On this adventure I set out to photograph the Himba people in the far north of Namibia. Please enjoy some of the behind the scenes clips I gathered from this fantastic experience with the Himba tribe.

The story behind this photograph:

The Himba Tribe, as well as the Zemba and Herero, are nomadic people who live in areas of Namibia which we would view as a dry inhospitable land of sand, rocks & dust. The concept of desolate living has always fascinated me.

As I set up my gear, the people of the Himba Tribe gathered around to see what “futuristic stuff” I was unpacking. They were just as captivated by my equipment as I was absorbed by their culture. Even though we could not understand each other as my translator was still negotiating with the chief to get permission to take pictures, we managed to communicate by sign & body language.

Now that we had established a little order I got to work photographing a few selected tribe members. As if out of nowhere more and more people starting arriving on the scene, amongst them an older man came to sit on the sidelines. Fascinated by this man I asked if he would mind having his photo taken. His hearty laugh was a moment I captured and I will cherish for forever. His name is Ngupa.

With these portraits I made, I want to preserve the original culture of their tribe and of the satisfied and primordial life these people still live whilst struggling to maintain control of their life and lands.
